Finally!

Callie is finally over her stomach virus (knock on wood)!!!  We thought it was never going to end, but for the last two days she has been very healthy.  She definitely caught a bad bug and it took her about eight days to get over it.  We ended up taking her to the ER again on Saturday (the child can never get sick during normal doctor's office hours) because we thought she was getting really dehydrated.  The hospital we went to had a Pediatrician on call and she decided to start an IV and get some much needed fluids into Callie.  The doctor did a great job starting the IV (I was kind of nervous since the easiest place for an IV on Callie is in her foot) and the fluids really helped Callie feel better and gave her the extra energy she needed to fight off the rest of the virus.  We also had a blood count done to make sure that her platelets were okay, sometimes they can go down during illness.  Well, it turns out that Callie likes to produce platelets when she is sick because they were at 87,000, up 20,000 from a month and a half ago!!  Now we are just trying to get back into her normal schedule and routine, which is proving to be kind of difficult.  Scott and I have both learned to have lots of patience during this time.  It has definitely been a tough week with not a lot of sleep and lots of worrying about our little girl, but now that she is healthy it's back to lots of giggling and playing :)

Scott was also busy getting his arm healthy while all of this was going on.  He threw one inning in a Minor League game yesterday and did well.  He was actually called back up to the Big League team today and will make his next start on Sunday.  We are very excited that he is back up, but it also means that he has to leave tomorrow for a five day road trip.  Callie and I were getting spoiled with him home every day after he hurt his arm.  I guess we will just have to readjust :)

I will post some new pictures soon.  Callie wasn't in the best picture taking mood while she was sick :)

Sick baby

Poor Callie has a stomach virus.  We thought we were in the clear after she was better from the head cold, and then two days later she got sick again.  She had a high fever, was vomiting and had diarrhea.  The fever has been gone for two days but we are still dealing with the other two.  We've been to the ER twice, mostly because we can't just call our doctor's office and describe her symptoms, we have to go in to get her checked, and because we are first time parents :)  Luckily we met an amazing woman in the area that is a pediatric nurse.  I've already talked to her multiple times and she actually came over to check on Callie today.  We are worried that she is getting really dehydrated, but she seems to be doing okay.  Turns out these viruses can take 7-10 days to get over, we are on day four, so hopefully she will start to get better too.  Scott and I are exhausted since Callie had been sleeping 12 hours at night and last night she only slept about 7.  She is exhausted, but is napping now.

Callie update

sitting all by myself :)

Callie continues to do great.  She is just getting over her first little head cold, and we are very happy for that.  We actually took her to the doctor a couple of days ago because we thought she was showing signs of an ear infection, and that was definitely an adventure!  Her pediatrician was not in the office, so they told us to go to the ER at the hospital her pediatrician works at.  First, they handed us a thermometer to check her temperature, which I thought was weird.  She was a little warm, but not feverish.  They asked us what her normal temperature was, which I had no clue of.  Then, instead of just weighing her they asked us how much she weighs.  Again, I didn't know, I don't have a scale at my house . . .  We finally got in to see the ER doctor and he just asked us questions, it didn't even seem like he wanted to examine Callie.  But once the team representative, who was acting as an interpreter, told the doctor that Scott was a baseball player the doctor started doing a little more.  He looked in her throat and said it was a little red, and with the runny nose and congestion we told him she had he determined she had a cold.  When we asked him to look in her ears to rule out an ear infection he looked at us like we were crazy.  We had to ask like five times for the doctor to look in her ears.  When the nurse finally brought the tool over to do it the doctor said he couldn't see anything because there was too much wax.  We asked if he could remove the wax, and he said he couldn't, that we would have to go to an ear specialist!!!  WHAT?!?!?!  Well, we made it to the specialist who took the ear wax out in record time and said there was no ear infection.  So, let's just say that the medical system in Japan is a little confusing . . .  All in all it was a crazy day, but at least Callie turned out to be okay.

Callie has also turned into a rolling machine!  Well, at least a one way rolling machine :)  She rolls from her back to her stomach really well, but gets stuck on her arm when she tries to roll over to her back again.  But she constantly wants to roll, especially when I am changing her diaper.  She loves being naked and she rolls over to try and escape.  This is usually not a problem, except the other day she rolled off her blanket onto the carpet and peed.  When I saw what she was doing she just started to laugh, like she did it on purpose to be funny :)

on my tummy

She is also using her hands a lot more.  When we are at restaurants she is always reaching for the menu so she can turn the pages and always wants to hold whatever you have in your hands.  Every time I am on the phone I have to put it on speaker because she wants to hold it :)   Her exersaucer has an area where there are buttons to push that play music and say words, and flip little pages, she loves it!  Every time she makes it make a noise she looks up at us with an "I did it!" look on her face, it is so cute!  You can tell she is learning how to use her hands and fingers and it's just amazing.  Scott and I will have to be very careful to not place any limits on what we think she can do, because I have a feeling she will be able to do anything she wants.  She will definitely be a very determined child :)

Family Time

We will be getting to spend more time as a family over the next couple of weeks.  Scott re-injured his elbow while he was pitching on Tuesday.  So far we think the injury is not serious.  In 2006 he had the same injury and recovered well from it.  He has bone chips in his elbow and they have become irritated and somehow moved to a position that makes it painful to pitch.  Scott had a CT Scan on Wednesday and the doctor confirmed his thoughts.  He will be taking about 6 days off from throwing and then slowly work back into pitching in games again.  The doctor seemed to think it would take a couple of weeks before he is back in game shape.

The one good thing about this is that Scott now goes and works out at the rehab facility in the mornings and then we have the rest of the day to spend together.  So, it will be nice to have him home more, I know that Callie will really enjoy it.  She is definitely a Daddy's girl :)

It's been awhile since the last post, but we have been busy with Scott being home and trying to get settled here. We had a great week with Scott home from his road trip. We braved the trip to Costco and boy was it crazy. This last week has been a holiday week (Golden Week) in Japan and I think most people must have the week off from work because everything is packed!!

I wanted to check out the Costco, which is in Osaka, and get some diapers, I was sick of the Japanese kind, they just don't fit right, and Scott got some Dr. Pepper. It's kind of a long trip to get there. We took the train to Costco but then had to take a taxi back because of all the stuff we bought. Next time we will just buy our stuff and then do home delivery.

We also went to Ikea on Thursday. It just opened two weeks ago and it must have been packed on the opening weekend, because there were still ropes outside for the long lines of people that wanted to get in. Ikea was even more packed than Costco (still Golden Week)! We got a couple of things, including a chair that sort of rocks so that is nice. They also have home delivery so it should be here in the next couple of days.

On Tuesday we went to Scott's game, a day game, and it was packed! I thought the last game he pitched in had a lot of people there, but I was wrong. It was crazy. There is constant noise and everyone has these little bats they bang together. I thought Callie wasn't going to like it, but she did great. Scott pitched okay, but got the loss after throwing five innings. He did get a hit, which I have on video, so that was fun to see. He is on the road again and pitches tomorrow in Tokyo. He will be home late Wednesday night.

just chillin :)
