Spring Break 2008

Callie had her first Spring Break trip last week.  We went with Scott's family to San Antonio, TX for a little vacation.  We went to the zoo, walked along the famous San Antonio river walk and had a great time.  The weather was beautiful and Callie really enjoyed being with her other set of Grandparents.

Callie also touched her toes on her own for the first time on Easter.  I was changing her diaper and looked down and she was grabbing the toes on her left foot!  It was very exciting, mostly just for me :)  She has done it a couple of more times since then, so that is great.  

I also took Callie to a place called Cranial Technologies on Monday.  Our Physical Therapist and Pediatrician noticed that her head was a little misshapen so I took her in to get her checked.  It turns out that the left side of her head is fairly flat.  This happens from laying on one side a lot.  It turns out since the 1992 campaign of "Back to Sleep" to put kids on their backs to sleep to prevent SIDS, this condition is happening more and more.  The nurse recommended treatment with a DOC band, which is a kind of helmet that she would wear for 23 hours a day.  Well, it turns out the helmet needs to be readjusted every two weeks, and since we are leaving for Japan soon, that doesn't really work out for us.  So, we made the decision to hold off with treatment until we get back from Japan in September.  The RN that examined her said treatment at 11 months of age will still produce great results, she would just have to wear the helmet for longer than if we started treatment now.  The helmet might end up serving two purposes though.  Since Callie will probably be moving around a lot more and starting to walk while she is in treatment, it will help to prevent many bumps and bruises :)  Here is the website if you want to check it out:  www.cranialtech.com

Here are some pictures of Callie in the cutest outfit ever!!  Thanks to cousin Rosie for the great sunglasses.  They are still a little big, but they will be perfect once we start going to baseball games.

Grandma & Grandpa Kohn visit

This last week has been pretty busy.  My parents, now Grandma & Grandpa Kohn, came to visit and Callie and I had a blast!!  It was great to get a little break.  I didn't wash a bottle or a dish the whole time there were here, and dinner was always made for me.  Callie also really enjoyed their visit.  I'm pretty sure she had a smile on her face the whole time :)  We were both sad to see them go back home tonight.  But, they will be back soon.  They purchased a house in the Keller area where they will move to in the next couple of years after they both retire.  I guess they just couldn't stay away from their favorite granddaughter :)  So, if anyone knows someone that needs to rent a home in Keller, TX my parents would be very appreciative :)

Callie has been doing great.  Her platelets were fabulous on Monday!!  ( I still can't get over how high they were ).  We also made it to Scottish Rite Hospital on Wednesday, since we were snowed out last week.  She had some new splints made for her.  They are a little different than the first ones, and she fusses a little when I put them on, but she is still sleeping through the night, so they must not be that bad.  I'm sure she will get used to them soon.

Oh, and Callie also got a high chair this week.  She loves it!  It's a little big for her, but I think she really enjoys being able to watch everyone at dinner time.

Scott has also been doing well.  He pitched in a minor league game last week and went 6 innings, throwing 87 pitches.  He had one earned run and 2 un-earned runs and a couple of strikeouts.  It was the most he's thrown in a game since 2003.  He felt great, so it sounds like he should fall back into the role of starting pitcher pretty well.  He is anxious for us to get to Japan, only 29 more days to go!

It's late and I'm tired, so I'm going to make this short.  Callie had a platelet count on Monday and she was at 68,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Her last count two weeks ago was 45,000.  Keep it up Callie :)

Texas Weather

I have definitely learned since living in Texas that the weather really changes from day to day.  Well this week the weather did not disappoint.  Monday evening we had a "Snow Advisory", we didn't really get any snow just some sleet.  Tuesday and Wednesday were gorgeous, lots of sun and temperatures in the 60's.  Today it is snowing!!!  At about 11:30 am we had thunder and lightning, and then about 11:45 am it started to sleet.  Callie had her appointment at Scottish Rite Hospital today at 1 pm and Scott's dad came over at 11:45 to ride over to Dallas with me.  Once we started driving we realized it was probably smarter to go back home and cancel the appointment because it had started to sleet pretty hard.  We are now in a Winter Storm Warning until 6 am Friday and are expected to get 3-5 inches of snow.  There is at least an inch on the ground right now at 2:45 pm and it's not slowing down.  It's crazy!!  My parents are coming to visit next week and it is supposed to be back up in the 60's and sunny.  Here are some pictures of the snow.  I could barely open the back door the snow was coming into the house!

4 month check up

Callie had her 4 month well baby check today and she did great.  She weighed in at 12 lbs. 4 oz. (I think their scale is a little light) which put her at the 24% for her weight and she measured 24 1/4 inches long, which puts her at the 50% for her height.  This is all great news.  TAR kids tend to be on the smaller side; I know Callie is only 4 months old, but hopefully it looks like she might be a normal height.  

Our pediatrician wants Callie to be eating more formula at each feeding before she starts on solid foods, so we aren't going to be starting that yet.  That's really okay by me.  It means less work and less dishes to clean :)

I'm also pretty sure that she is starting to teethe already.  I bought her a teething ring today and she went to town chomping on it.  I'm glad she liked it, because she was chewing on my fingers before.  Not that it hurt, but it was very slobbery :)

We visit Scottish Rite hospital on Thursday for another follow up appointment.  She will probably be fitted with new splints for her arms.  She is already starting to wiggle out of her left one at night.

We also have our tickets for Japan now.  We are leaving on April 13th and I'm so excited!  We can't wait to see Scott!  This last week we have finally been able to talk over the internet with web cams, so we have been able to see each other.  I think Callie really likes it.  She smiles and usually "talks" to daddy when we are online :)

Shots Again

Callie has started her next round of immunizations.  She had her second shot today.  When we went in for Callie's first shot the nurse was concerned about the amount of petechia Callie had on her face and body and the doctor suggested we go get a platelet count just to be safe.  So, we went all the way downtown to the hospital (it's not really that far, about 20 min. but still kind of a pain) to get a count.  We went to the lab instead of the Hemo clinic so I had to wait for the doctor to call me at home with the results.  It was a little nerve racking, but all turned out to be fine because Callie's platelets were at 45,000!!!  That's up 8,000 from a week and a half ago.  She is so amazing!

We have also been doing "Mommy and Me Yoga" from a video I have.  It's great!  Callie really seems to like it too.  I think she has a crush on the 6 month old little boy that is in the video.  Every time we are supposed to be playing she is craning her neck to watch the little boy on the video, it's so cute :)  I'm not sure if the yoga is doing anything for Callie, but I am definately feeling the results!  My legs and arms are pretty sore, but it's okay.  It's a neat way for us to play together while I also get a workout.

Everything else is going well, except for poor Ozzie.  I think he felt really ignored the other day because he escaped from the backyard!  I got a call from our next door neighbor saying that Ozzie was visiting them and had been for awhile.  He got out while I was feeding Callie and trying to put her down for a nap, so I was pretty distracted.  Good thing our neighbors are great and have a little dog that Ozzie loves to play with.  

Scott is doing well also.  He got to move into our apartment today so that is good, and they start Spring Training games soon, so that will keep him busy.  We got to do a video call on the computer today and that was exciting!!  He was so excited to "see" Callie and how much she has changed.  It really confused Ozzie though, he could hear Scott talking and was going all over the house looking for him and barking :)

We have a busy two weeks ahead of us with doctors appointments and then my parents are coming to visit for a week.  They are so excited to see Callie again.
